The Pale is a poorly-understood mystical phenomenon that acts as an impassable barrier surrounding and enclosing the Known World of Firma. Observed closely and directly, it appears as a multicolored mirror composed of light or energy which curves very slightly in the shape of a dome. It is known that the Pale totally encloses that skies above the Known World, and attempts to dig under it seem to confirm that it follows the same curvature underneath. It is totally reflective, seemingly indestructible, and at a distance of several hundred yards, is itself utterly imperceptible. A strange distortion of its reflective properties creates a mirage of the landscape just prior to the edge of the Pale that seems to stretch on without obstruction. For instance, at the far western edge of the Blistering Sea in Kaht, one will simply see the desert stretching on into the distance as if there was nothing there, until closing to just past two hundred yards from the Pale itself, at which point the mirror-like property of the Pale will slowly become more evident.
There have been many attempts to breach the Pale, and many claims that it has been breached, but history knows of no successful entry or exit from the Known World. That the environmental and climatic conditions surrounding the Pale are so inhospitable, usually consisting of either harsh desert, arctic waste, or intensely stormy waters, does not help efforts to pierce the Pale. It is not known exactly when the Pale enclosed the Known World, but it is older than recorded history.
